The Missouri River ecosystem is a highway for migratory birds throughout the Western Hemisphere. Lisa Webb, an ecologist with the USGS Missouri Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Lab, will describe bird migrations along the Missouri River corridor, habitat needs of different species during migration, and how birds adapt their migration strategies in an altered landscape.
How and when birds migrate and the habitat conditions they encounter during migration can impact many portions of avian life history, including body condition, reproduction, survival and even population levels. Come get the ‘bird’s eye view’ on how and why birds rely on the Missouri River during migration and the many ways avian ecologists study bird migrations.

This map tracks the migration of a single female mallard, using both the Mississippi and Missouri River valleys to guide its migration.
