Big Muddy Speaker Series presents:
Dee and Floyd’s Big Muddy Adventure

This presentation originally took place on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025 in Columbia, Missouri.
If you’re into paddling, travel, you love a good adventure story, or you need some MR340 inspiration – this presentation is for you!
Dee Landau recounts her adventure paddling her trusty kayak Floyd over 2,300 miles down the Missouri River. From its headwaters in Three Forks Montana all the way to St. Louis, it was big water, stunning landscapes, remote wilderness, river magic, and some fun wildlife encounters.
Hear what it’s like to spend weeks living on the water, camping in wild places, battling headwinds and storms, dodging barges, and the deep rewards of solitude, resilience, and connection with nature.
Through videos, photos, maps, and personal stories, she shares the joy and challenges of her adventure – a one-of-a-kind journey on North America’s longest river!

Dee Landau
Dee Landau grew up in New Hampshire with a deep-rooted belief that she is part of nature—not separate from it. She’s been an “outside girl” her whole life: the sun lights her up, rivers ground her, and she’s happiest anywhere wild—on a trail, in the woods, or on the water.
What began with road running evolved into trail running, hiking, and eventually backpacking. Dee has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, along with hundreds of miles on other trails across the country. For her, “walking distance” takes on a whole new meaning.
After moving to Kansas in 2002, Dee discovered the Missouri River—and it was love at first launch! In 2007, she co-piloted The Catalyst safety boat in the MR340 and was instantly hooked. Since then, she’s served on the safety crew five more times and has raced the 340 herself seven times, both solo kayak and in tandem canoe with her husband, Ken.
Over the years, Dee has paddled thousands of miles between Atchison, KS, and St. Charles, MO—training, racing, and simply soaking in the river’s beauty. Her passion for the river eventually carried her all the way to Montana to explore the rest of our Big Muddy!
